Queen Latifah Faces Royal Legal Pain

Two of Queen Latifah's subjects have proven themselves to be none too loyal, filing separate lawsuits against the star for more than $1 million in allegedly unpaid fees. Makeup consultant Roxanna Floyd and stylist Susan Moses filed their coordinated suits in Manhattan federal court Monday against the Oscar-nominated, Grammy-winning Latifah, whose real name is Dana Owens. Floyd claims she's due roughly $700,000 for work done between July 2005 and February 2008 in developing, marketing and producing Latifah's Queen Collection for CoverGirl. As for Moses, she claims she's owed $300,000, which includes a $50,000 per year salary, during the same period for advising the 39-year-old entertainer on her Curvations full-figured lingerie line. A few shoppers splurge before sales tax goes up

Better move fast if you want to beat Wednesday's state sales tax increase. Eric Edenfield of San Francisco did just that when he purchased a water heater last weekend for the duplex he rents out in Guerneville. The new water-saving "on demand" heater might be good for the environment, but at $3,000, it's tough on the wallet. "I bit the bullet and I ordered it," said Edenfield, 45, who was considering buying a second water heater for his other unit before Wednesday. "I didn't need it until the end of the year, but I thought, why not save (some money) now?" A temporary, statewide, 1 percent sales tax increase goes into effect on Wednesday. It is designed to add revenue to California's coffers, but could worsen what is already a tough time for consumers and retailers in a recessionary economy. The new sales tax is set to expire July 1, 2011, or July 1, 2012, depending on whether voters approve a constitutional amendment, Proposition 1A or the Budget Stabilization Act, in a statewide election to be held May 19. The increase means that the sales tax in California will range from 8.25 percent in some areas - among them Humboldt, Monterey and Shasta counties - to as high as 10.25 percent in Pico Rivera and South Gate, both in Los Angeles County. That's because voters in some cities and counties approved local sales tax increases that also go into effect Wednesday. In the Bay Area, voters in Sonoma and Marin counties approved an increased tax to fund rail transit, bumping the rate to 9 percent there. In Santa Rosa - where Edenfield bought his water heater - the rate will be 9.25 percent due to the city's current district tax. Effective Wednesday, the sales tax in San Francisco will be 9.5 percent. The tax will be 9.75 percent in Alameda County, 9.25 percent in San Mateo County and 9.25 percent in Contra Costa County, with the exception of Richmond, Pinole and El Cerrito, where it will be 9.75  percent. Some consumers said they increasingly are turning to the Internet, where often they can skirt state taxes if retailers fail to add those charges to the total sales costs. SOURCE:SFGATE.COM

Government Ready to Split GM in Two

Most papers continue to lead with the troubles facing General Motors and Chrysler. Yesterday, President Obama delivered what the New York Times describes as an "ultimatum" to the troubled automakers warning that they'll be headed for bankruptcy unless they quickly make major changes. GM's shares plunged 25 percent and the Dow Jones industrial average fell 3.3 percent. The Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal point out that if the companies have to go into bankruptcy, the Obama administration wants to divide their "good" and "bad" assets. The "good" assets would form a new viable company that could continue to exist or be sold, and the "bad" assets would be purged. While the LAT says that bankruptcy "would be a last resort," the WSJ notes that it looks increasingly likely that GM "will be forced into filing for bankruptcy protection, sometime in mid-to-late May." USA Today says the administration's plan is designed to find a balance between "growing public outrage over corporate bailouts and fear that if the auto industry sinks, it will take millions of jobs and the fragile economy down with it." The Washington Post focuses on fears swirling around corporate America that the administration's plan for the automakers, and particularly the ouster of GM's chief executive, Rick Wagoner, means the government is ready to take similar steps with banks that received taxpayer money. USAT goes high with Obama's plans for the automakers but leads with word that the Environmental Protection Agency will announce plans today to monitor the quality of the air outside 62 schools in 22 states. The paper describes it as the "most sweeping effort to determine whether toxic chemicals permeate the air schoolchildren breathe." Let’s Talk About Sex

Whether it’s in terms of STD’s and fear or enjoyment and pleasure, lately everything I overhear about sex is casting the act in the most negative terms. Irresponsibility aside, sex is meant to be safe, fun and completely open to one’s own interpretation. Women are unquestionably more sexual beings than men, which explains why more of us are exploring strip clubs, swinger spots and attending toy parties and stripper pole workouts. What is most exciting about sex has been castigated and relegated to homophobic, lackluster missionary madness; when in reality, 78 percent of women in relationships use some kind of sexual aid, according to a report released during the 2nd Women’s Sexual Health State-of-the-Art Series conference. Perhaps this is why alternative lifestyles are not tolerated by society in general. Frequent and good sex is both a health and wellness issue and one of delight and gratification. Religion, media and other enforced differences can be identified as culprits. Many of us spend our adult years breaking free from the anti-sex teachings of our church and elders. I meet far too many women who have never had an orgasm or swear they don’t enjoy sex, whether it’s with a man, woman or alone. Sexual exploration is key to satisfaction. You can’t be scared of your body if you ever seek to truly enjoy it. Great sex is great when we release all of our inhibitions, hang ups and insecurities and allow ourselves to feel some of the most natural and wonderfully powerful sensations we can have as human beings. I wonder why, however, sex can’t be more of a public topic. A lot of what I have experienced in love and relationships, both memorable experiences and those I wish I could forget, have been experienced by my other women friends as well. Yet, it is only during some power patio drinking that all of these moments get some conversation time. People probably fear being scrutinized for some of their freakier fantasies, but if you can’t comfortably explain what you like or enjoy sexually, then you probably shouldn’t be doing it. The good news is that there is no right or wrong way to enjoy sex, unless your enjoyment comes at the harm or detriment of someone else. Today's Papers: Last Chance for GM and Chrysler?

The Los Angeles Times and Wall Street Journal banner, while USA Today, the New York Times, and the Washington Post lead with, news that the Obama administration forced the head of General Motors to resign and has put both GM and Chrysler on notice that they won't get another round of federal aid unless they come up with a more aggressive restructuring plan. President Obama is set to announce today that the restructuring plans presented by GM and Chrysler earlier this year didn't go far enough to dig the companies out of their current mess, and he will give them more time, coupled with stricter conditions, to come up with more realistic plans. Administration officials emphasized they're prepared to let the companies fall into bankruptcy. The NYT declares that the decision amounts to "a level of government involvement in business perhaps not seen since the Great Depression" while the WSJ points out that it indicates the Treasury Department "intends to wade more deeply than most observers expected into the affairs of the country's largest and oldest car company." The White House will give GM 60 days to come up with a new restructuring plan, while Chrysler will have 30 days to work out an alliance agreement with Italian automaker Fiat. The government will give both companies just enough money to survive that period. If Chrysler and Fiat reach an agreement, the government would be willing to lend Chrysler another $6 billion. The anticipated matchup between the nation’s two dominant power forwards, the Oklahoma sophomore Blake Griffin and the North Carolina senior Tyler Hansbrough, quickly turned into one between Griffin and the Tar Heels’ breadth of talent. From the beginning, it was no contest. North Carolina, seeded No. 1 in the South Regional, overwhelmed second-seeded Oklahoma, 72-60, on Sunday to advance to the Final Four in Detroit. “That’s the way I recruit, that’s the way we try to run our program, that’s what we try to have in every team I’ve ever coached, is more than one guy as the star,” North Carolina Coach Roy Williams said. “You’ve got to have other guys, you’ve got to have good balance inside, scoring outside.” The Tar Heels got it on Sunday, and the Sooners did not. North Carolina will play Villanova on Saturday in one national semifinal. Connecticut and Michigan State will play in the other. It will be North Carolina’s second consecutive Final Four appearance, and 18th over all, the most of any program. The Tar Heels (32-4) last won the championship in 2005. Trick of 'magic' tax refund loans? High rates

A broad smile spreads over Magic Johnson's face. "Sooner or later, we all need help," the former NBA superstar says into the camera. "If you need cash quickly, Jackson Hewitt has the Money Now loan. It's fast, it's simple - it's money like magic." But consumer advocates say the quickie tax-refund loans Johnson is advertising prey on the working poor. These refund anticipation loans - short-term cash advances against expected tax refunds - carry hefty price tags. On an annualized basis, the interest rates range from 40 to nearly 500 percent. "These loans gouge (taxpayers) with all kinds of fees and ridiculous add-ons," said Kimberly Jones, policy advocate at the California Reinvestment Coalition. "When (low- or moderate-income) people have the right information, they can get their taxes prepared for free and receive all of the tax refund due to them." But the lure of quick cash tempts plenty of people. About 1 out of every 15 taxpayers, or 8.7 million people, opted for the tax-refund loans in 2007, costing them $833 million in loan charges and another $68 million in related fees, according to Chi Chi Wu, a staff attorney with the National Consumer Law Center in Boston, who analyzed IRS data. Almost two-thirds of the tax-refund borrowers receive the earned income tax credit, a special program for low-income working families. "This is the government's biggest anti-poverty program," Wu said. "The companies pitching tax-refund loans know there is a population of low-income folks who expect a big refund (because of the earned income tax credit). This product is really targeted to them." Refund anticipation loans are marketed by tax-preparation services, but are actually made by banks. The banks and the tax services split the fees. Jackson Hewitt, which has about 6,800 franchised and company-owned offices nationwide, declined an interview request. In a statement, the New Jersey company said: "For those that have limited or no access to traditional banking relationships and may have a need for quick access to funds to meet a timely expense, a (refund anticipation loan) may be a viable financial option, as well as a more cost-effective option when compared to seeking a cash advance on a credit card or other short-term loan option." T.I. Sentenced to a Year and a Day

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- Rap star T.I. was sentenced in Atlanta federal court Friday to one year and one day in prison and ordered to pay a $100,300 fine on weapons charges related to purchasing machine guns and silencers. The rapper, whose real name is Clifford Harris, reached the terms of the sentence in a plea agreement with prosecutors last year."I would like to say thank you to some, and apologize to others," Harris said at his sentencing."In my life, I have been placed in the worst-case scenario and had to make the best of it," he said. "Most often, things I have learned have been from trial and error. I knew no way to protect myself than to arm myself." He was dressed in a gray suit and black shirt and tie.Harris, 28, also was sentenced to some property forfeiture, supervised release for three years after his prison sentence, 365 days of home confinement and 1,500 hours of community service. He has already served 305 days of home confinement and 1,030 hours of service.He also must undergo DNA testing and drug counseling, cannot own firearms and must submit to reasonable searches and a financial audit. "We are very pleased with the result in this case," U.S. Attorney David E. Nahmias said. "Mr. Harris has received a significant penalty for the serious firearms offenses he committed. ..."His prison sentence was reduced from what it might have been, but the public got something very significant in exchange: the extensive and unique community service program that Mr. Harris committed to doing when he pleaded guilty. "By all accounts, his community service has been a remarkable success -- it certainly exceeded our expectations -- and there is still more to come when he gets out of prison." Former Atlanta Mayor and U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young spoke on behalf of Harris, comparing black-on-black violence to the Ku Klux Klan decades ago. Young said he regarded working with Harris not so much as a chance to help him but more as "an opportunity for him to help me." "We hit it off immediately," Young said. "It was a grandfather type of relationship." Bishop Eddie Long of the New Birth Baptist Church also spoke in support of Harris. Harris will be taken into custody no earlier than May 19.

Dozens march for Mixon, against police

(03-25) 20:36 PDT Oakland -- About 60 people marched and rallied in Oakland on Wednesday to condemn the police and honor Lovelle Mixon, who was killed by Oakland police after he fatally shot four officers Saturday. "OPD you can't hide - we charge you with genocide," chanted the demonstrators as they marched along MacArthur Boulevard, near the intersection with 74th Avenue where Mixon, 26, a fugitive parolee, gunned down two motorcycle officers who had pulled him over in a traffic stop. He killed two more officers who tried to capture him where he was hiding in his sister's apartment nearby. The protest was organized by the Oakland branch of the Uhuru Movement, whose flyers for the march declared, "Stop Police Terror." Many marchers wore T-shirts featuring Mixon's photo, including a woman identified by march organizers as Mixon's mother. The woman declined to comment and gave her name only as Athena. Lolo Darnell, one of Mixon's cousins at the demonstration, said, "He needs sympathy too. If he's a criminal, everybody's a criminal." Asked about police allegations that Mixon was suspected in several rapes, including that of a 12-year-old girl, marcher Mandingo Hayes said, "He wasn't a rapist. I don't believe that." Bystanders had mixed reactions. Nicole Brown said that she can't condone murder but that police don't respect residents of the area. Outsourced condom production could shut US factory

The last U.S.-based supplier of condoms for global HIV/AIDS prevention programs could be forced to shut its doors because the federal government sent the work to cheaper suppliers in Asia. The change came earlier this month as Congress dropped a requirement that the government buy American-made condoms when possible, with exceptions for price and availability. Congress traditionally has directed the U.S. Agency for International Development to use American suppliers for the hundreds of millions of condoms it sends into developing countries. The main supplier to benefit from that directive is Alatech Healthcare Products, a southeastern Alabama company with about 300 employees. Over the years, Alatech became the program's sole U.S. provider. USAID says Alatech has had problems filling orders, and there were complaints from the field about the quality of its condoms. Despite Congress' direction, the agency has gradually outsourced part of the work to companies in Asia that provide condoms for less than half of Alatech's price. Just after Congress omitted "buy American" language for the program in its latest spending bill, USAID quickly signed new contracts with three foreign suppliers and dropped Alatech altogether. The new contractors are in China, South Korea and Malaysia. "Our responsibility is to provide good stewardship for the taxpayers' dollars," said agency spokesman Harry Edwards. "That is what we are trying to do." Company President Larry Povlacs said Alatech provided durable condoms at USAID's request and was never asked to address any complaints about that style. He said USAID simply wanted the cheapest product without regard for his workers in Dothan and Eufaula, Ala. "I'm faced with telling people that I've worked with for 30 years that they may no longer have a job," Povlacs said. Gloria Steele, an assistant administrator at USAID, said Alatech's price of about 5 cents per condom versus 2 cents elsewhere wasn't competitive, even when using a preferential contracting advantage that agencies give domestic bidders. Housekeeper Sues Kobe Bryant, Wife Vanessa For Wrongful Termination

 According to the Los Angeles Times, Maria Jimenez filed a wrongful-termination lawsuit last Friday (March 20) in Orange County Superior Court, alleging that Kobe's wife badgered and harassed her, and forced her to perform demeaning tasks. The 48-year-old housekeeper, originally from Peru, claims she worked 60 house a week in the Bryant's Newport Coast home, where her duties included cleaning their house, washing their laundry and cleaning up after their children. In the suit, she says Vanessa Bryant was incredibly abusive to her, so much so that in one incident, Vanessa demanded that she search through a bag of dog feces to retrieve a tag from an expensive blouse she accused Jimenez of ruining, so she could deduct it from her salary.She also alleges that she was called "lazy," "slow," "dumb," a "liar," and was addressed with profanity often. The suit says Jimenez was so overworked, she threatened to quit on at least one occasion, but decided to ride it out after Kobe convinced her. She also claimed Vanessa accused her of stealing clothes, a toy and even her retainer from the couple. The Bryants denied the allegations in a statement from the law firm Loeb & Loeb LLP, which has offices in Los Angeles. "Ms. Jimenez's outrageous allegations of improper conduct are totally unfounded and patently false," the statement said. "The Bryants intend to vigorously defend against these untruthful allegations and are confident that the baseless nature of the allegations will be proven."Jimenez's lawyer, William Vogeler, said his client was wrongly discharged because she was working under "intolerable circumstances" that led to her leaving the job. Vogeler also said the Bryants did not provide Jimenez with health insurance.The suit does not specify the amount that Jimenez is seeking in damages, but Jimenez said in the suit that she sustained damages of more than $20,000 in unpaid overtime. Jimenez also alleges that Vanessa Bryant screamed at her for putting a $690 blouse in the washing machine, and demanded that Jimenez put her hand in a bag of dog feces to retrieve the price tag for the blouse. Jimenez refused and said she would quit, but Vanessa Bryant allegedly demanded that she pay for the blouse first, the suit states. Excerpt from BallerStatus.com ~ Akon's producer Detail was robbed at gunpoint at his Van Nuys, Calif. home Wednesday morning (March 25), with suspects making off with more than $300,000 worth of possessions. According to TMZ.com, the producer believes former hip-hop mogul Suge Knight was behind the incident. The site reports that site that at around 3:00 a.m. this morning, five men broke into his home with guns in tow, and told him they were there to collect a debt he owed to Knight, and proceeded to collect. Detail was asleep when the men broke in, and when they made their way into his room, they stole around $170,000 worth of jewelry from his room, and then demanded a key to his safe or they'd "kill all four people in the house." He didn't give up the key, so the men took the safe altogether. In addition to jewelry and the safe, the thieves made off with expensive audio equipment, and took the key to a Mercedes. Detail and others were not hurt during the robbery. TMZ says the feud stems from an altercation between Knight and a man from Akon's campduring a private party held in Scottsdale, Arizona during NBA All-Star Weekend, which ended with Suge Knight getting badly beaten at the hands of Robert Carnes Jr. of Akon's Konvict Muzik camp. Knight suffered several fractured bones in the face, and was hospitalized.
