Everybody who know me know you come around Wayne, you better not be trying to hear the latest hits from somebody's album. 'Cause when you listen to another niggas music you can get in that zone. Like I done listened to Hov and I didn't wanna do nothing but get shot everyday, I didn't wanna go to the studio. Hov wasn't rapping about going to the studio. I stopped listening after The Black Album. I stopped listening to other people's music.

RAP SHEET: Ja Rule Setting it Straight on Gay Remarks

Though he was quoted spewing homophobic rhetoric in the September edition of Complex magazine, once-hot hip-hopper Ja Rule cleared things up with AOL Music's Spinner blog. "I was taken out of context," the 31-year-old Murda Inc. rapper (legally known as Jeffrey Atkins) said about remarks he made to the hip-hop fashion magazine about needing "to step to MTV and Viacom and lets talk about all these f---ing shows that they have on MTV that is promoting homosexuality, that my kids can't watch this s---.""My statement was more about where our mind state is as a people," the pint-sized lyricist continued the clarification to Spinner. "We're focused on the wrong things -- like, our country is at war right now," he continued. "These things are more of a problem to me. Like another case I just read about -- young ladies being raped by six white men. These are the stories that should be popping up on my TV screen. That's what I was talking about, and somehow it got spun into some other s---."When probed about his stance on homosexuality and gay marriage, he took a more diplomatic approach, admitting that "it's not something that bothers me."Peculiarly enough, former rap superstar DMX bragged of having proof of Ja Rule being homosexual during their bitter feud from a few years back. Congress Goes Head to Head with Hip-Hop Artists on Offensive Lyrics

That's what rapper Master P told the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee today in a hearing on hip-hop and stereotypes. Master P, born Percy Miller, in New Orleans, formed and founded No Limit Records in the 1990s and made millions of dollars off records with the sexual and violent lyrics found in most "gangsta rap." "My brother was killed. My cousin was killed ... and I used my rage," said Miller, whose album "Da Last Don" was No. 1 on the charts and went platinum four times over. Miller hopes he won't be judged by his past, which includes charges of felony gun possession and a season two stint on "Dancing With the Stars," but by his future -- a future he hopes will include a television show for people living in urban areas that would teach them about financial responsibility. "I'm going to challenge the networks. Let me put on a financial show, enhance our kids in these communities, and see what happens." Rapper David Banner, who testified alongside Master P, said that some segments of society were taking the role of music in culture too seriously. "It's still just a song," said Banner. He later added that members of Congress should focus on the message, not the word. "Instead of listening for curse words, listen that we're asking for help," he told the committee.
The hearing featured three panels of testimony, including one consisting of some of the most powerful CEOs in the entertainment industry. Edgar Bronfman, CEO of Warner Music and Doug Morris of Universal Music, defended the content of rap music, saying the artists had a First Amendment right for the work to be published and heard. "In my mind this is free speech, and this is what he wanted to say. It's not my place in this life to tell him what to say," said Morris, responding to a question from Rep. Owner of the Minnesota Twins Buys Hip-Hop Radio Station

Carl Pohlad, owner of the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball team, is now in the hip-hop broadcasting business. According to the Associated Press, the billionaire is set to hand over 28 million to Radio One Inc. for KTTBFM, or B-96, a hip-hop station in Minneapolis. Pohlad, who recently launched Northern Lights Broadcasting, is looking to get into the radio business and the purchase is his first major move in that direction. Steve Woodbury, president and CEO of Northern Lights, says that he has been tasked with finding other radio and TV stations with potential and starting a small media group. According to Woodbury, B-96 will retain its hip-hop format and all on-air personalities will remain. SOURCE OF THIS STORY

It’s official. BET Hip-Hop Awards returns to Atanta for the second time in a row. The event will be hosted by Katt Williams again. And, T.I. is top nominee (9!) once more. ESSENCE: Were you always going to be a solo artist?

KEYSHIA COLE: Well, actually, I was gonna be in a group with these two girls. We were in Los Angeles and we were working with Damon Elliot, who is Dionne Warwick’s son, and he was like, “Keysh, if you wanna sign with the girl group, you can; but I’ll sign you solo.” And I was like, I’d rather be solo because I do everything in the group anyway. They’re just pretty. We were gonna get, like, a $30,000 advance and split it ten/ten/ten; but I figured, "Why should I give them my $20,000 when I can get it myself?" So I told them, “I’m sorry, but I can’t.” Then I recorded a couple songs with Damon and one of them was (the hit single) “Love.” ESSENCE: Early in your career you went to Los Angeles and met legendary music producer Suge Knight and Tupac Shakur. What was that like? COLE: My brother was close with Pac, he got records with Pac and everything. And Pac’s mother is really cool with my brother and me. So to me, Pac was just like a big brother. That time was like one of the biggest moments in history, and I saw everything. I was with them in Malibu and Vegas and I stayed in the “big house” by myself. Missy Elliott has just signed a deal with Doritos to do an ad campaign for their new “Collision” chips. According to reports, the commercials debut September 17 and feature Elliott in the studio creating a “mash up,” while eating Doritos Collision chips, which contain two distinct flavor of chips. An online component to the campaign will also allow fans to create their own mash up singles, using the Grammy Award winning producer’s tracks in a competition for prizes. The advertising campaign also serves generate awareness for Missy Elliot’s upcoming album, The Countdown. (Source) I mean, we all knew Missy hit hard times, but wow. Talib Kweli to appear on "Tavis Smiley" Show Tonight!!

Rapper Talib Kweli just released his fourth solo album yesterday. The album Ear Drum is his first album that is recorded under his own record label, Blacksmith Music. The album features collaborations with Kanye West, Justin Timberlake, Norah Jones, KRS-One and Roy Ayers. Today Kweli sat down to talk with Tavis about his new album among other things. When Tavis Smiley asked Talib Kweli about his new album and how it compares to his previous albums, Talib Kweli told Tavis that he doesn’t like to compare albums because “they are like children” meaning he doesn’t love one more than the other they are just different. The album Ear Drum he states exemplifies the music that he grew up listening to. Talib Kweli worked with people such as Kanye West who he feels was influenced by the same people that he was growing up. Tavis Smiley also asked Talib Kweli about how he was able to be considered the best lyricist out there today. Kweli responded by saying that although he is proud to be associated with artist such as The Roots, Kanye West, Jay-Z, Common and Mos Def he feels that they have all ventured off into new avenues such as movies, and acting. While a lot of the other popular artists have expanded into other areas he worked to “master his craft of pure lyricism.” For Kweli the draw is lyrics. Tavis Smiley talked with Kweli about why he started his own label. Kweli felt that Geffen Records did a poor job in marketing him. On Kweli’s earlier album’s he had to pay for all of his videos out of his own pocket. He was discouraged at the fact that other artist such as 50 Cent and Kanye West started after him and they were reaching higher levels faster. The fact that other artist were accomplishing more made him revaluate what he was doing and how he was going at the business. Kweli also discussed the fact that he grew up with two parents, who both worked as professors. He said having two parents as educators have made him gravitate towards other artists who also have professors as parents. He also has said that having both parents in education has given him a strong work ethic with out a large financial reward. He said that growing up and watching his parents give to the community and being involved with out a large financial reward has taught him the value of being involved and give back to the community. Singer Carl Thomas had us all emotional in 2000 with his hit debut single "Emotional" and the follow-up, "I Wish." With those very big hits, he quickly became known as the balladeer of Bad Boy. He released his sophomore disc in 2004 that sailed to gold status with hits like "She Is." Since then, he's grown as a singer and a businessman and has prepped his third album "So Much Better," released last month, in his own time and on his own label. This is an independent company, distributed by Universal," Thomas said of the records backing. "[Music business executive] Jheryl Busby gave [producer] Mike City and me the opportunity to exercise our imprints so it's on Thom Tunes, which is my label, slash Umbrella, slash Universal." Thomas left the Bad Boy label in 2005 because of creative differences, but told EUR's Lee Bailey that putting out his latest disc on the umbrella boutique label isn't really that different. To me, it's the same game, just different numbers," he explained. "The money's better. The independent game allows you to be your own boss. Of course you share in the responsibility of the promotion and marketing of the album, whereas in other situations you don't, but at the same time the profit margins are a little bit better."

Mya Interview...and you thought she couldn't sing!

I'm sure some of you are saying, "Mya? Boring!" However, before you make that assumption check out my interview with the soft-spoken Mya where she talks her gay fanbase, album push backs, 50 Cent (remember that shady comment "I don't know how he would get Lloyd Banks confused with me"?), Sisqo's legendary gay rumors and more. I have to say before I interviewed Mya people "warned" me that she wasn't the nicest person and a bit boushee. So, I was prepared for the worst and Lawd knows I've interviewed some arrogant celebs, but Mya was incredibly warm and sincere. We talked a bit afterwards, took pictures and she made a point to say bye before I left. Nearly everytime someone tells me a celeb is going to be evil, they never are...except for _ _ _ _ _ _! Actor/singer Tyrese is hoping his upcoming "Shirts Off," tour with R&B stars Ginuwine and Tank is strictly for the ladies. how he is trying to ban the gays in a round about way. First off I’m not a fan of none of these singers, so there was never a plan to attend their “Shirts Off” tour. But to try to impose a ban on anyone for a concert is baffling to me.First off a dollar is a dollar whether it’s from a man or a woman. Secondly, lets be real, I dont know any single woman who care(s) about Married with four kids—Ginuwine, woman beater—Tyrese, and boring as hell—Tank. The gays might be the only ones who can salvage your career(s). It’s obvious that the ladies don’t care because all three of their current releases bombed on the billboard charts. It just amazes me that in 2007 we still have young, intelligent, black men still discriminating against others. These aren’t country bumpkins who have never been around a gay person in their lives.
